CHAPTER SIX

Dropping like her strings had been cut, she put her forehead to her knees and wrapped her arms around her shins. The thud-thud-thudding of her heart was competing with the buzzing in her ears as her body tried to decide between passing out and a panic attack.

Panic attack seemed to be gaining the upper hand. It was hard to breathe.

A sandpaper lick to the skin of her arms and the muzzle of a soft, furry face pushed between her hands. She opened her eyes and for a moment the world moved in vertigo-inducing waves.

Oh crap.

She closed them again.

She did not want to throw up here in the ballroom. As if she wasn’t making a big enough fool of herself already trying to be a grown-up bounty hunter. For fuck’s sake, she could barely keep her clothes washed, her hair brushed, the toilet and sink clean, and make it to school in time for classes. Let alone play hide-and-seek with a black-winged Angel who wanted her soul.

Pim stood on his hind legs and head-butted her gently. He was feeling the panic zipping through her nervous system. He meowed softly and she felt him jump away. He was back in a few seconds.

She smelled cinnamon.

Nessa cracked open her eyes.

A churro.

Chocolate dipped at one end.

Stretching up, Pim set it on her knees. When she hesitated, he nudged it closer.

Taking a deep breath, she reached for the churro and took a bite.

Then another and another.

She chewed and swallowed and tried to ignore the yelling and tumbling bodies all around her.

The buzzing became more muted and though her heart still pounded, it didn’t feel like it was going to burst out of her chest like an alien monster.

She broke off a piece of churro for Pim. An end with chocolate. Pim loved chocolate. He squatted on all fours to eat. Nessa absently ran her hand along his back. The fur stood on end and little sparks jumped from her fingers.

So many fuzzy Furries. So much static electricity.

Yes. So much.

The static electricity in the air was increasing exponentially from all the fighting, suffusing the ballroom from floor to ceiling. It even charged the polyester carpet. Norms couldn’t feel it, all that rogue energy looking for an outlet. She could. And she knew from experience, positive and negative particles wanted to be released.

By the time the last bite of churro was chewed and swallowed, the sugar and carbs had worked their own form of magic. Nessa could take a deep breath and the world had stopped tilting to one side.

What she saw was not a good thing. Fiona was now hidden within a Furry throng. It must be Fiona because a cell phone was being held high in one slim well-manicured hand filming the whole show. The witch was probably already writing captions in her head for the Instagram story.

The group shuffled to the opposite side of the ballroom.

“Do you smell the tiger?” she asked Pim.

He nodded, pointing to Fiona.

Nessa reached under her shirt to the summoning belt strapped around her waist.
